February is Black History Month - Law Library Resources and Displays

Each year, February marks Black History Month, a time to "celebrate giants of the civil rights movement" as well as the "countless other men and women whose names are etched in the hearts of their loved ones and the cornerstones of the country they helped to change" (from President Obama's proclamation of African American History Month 2015, available here.)

The President's Proclamation specifically calls on us to pause to reflect on our progress and our history and also to acknowledge our unfinished work.  In keeping with the President's charge, the Law Library (in conjunction with USD Law BLSA (Black Law Students Association) is currently featuring two displays for Black History Month, which are located on the main level of the library and the lower level of the library.

These displays offer print and electronic resources on the following important topics:

- Brown v. Board of Education and Other Important Cases (main level display)
- Voting Rights and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (main level display)
- The Civil Rights Movement and Civil Rights Laws (lower level display)
- History of Black Attorneys and Judges in the Legal Profession (lower level display)
- Biographies and Profiles of Important Figures in Black History

Especially featured in the displays are titles from the Law Library's e-books collection, available via our Research Databases page.  In addition to these resources, those interested in learning more about Black History Month and the history of civil rights in America are encouraged to explore the Library of Congress' website here as well as resources available via the National Archives
